How to Build a Simple Skincare Routine
A practical guide to gentle cleansing, targeted day and night serums, moisturizing, and daily sunscreen—without overcomplicating your routine.

A bathroom shelf can fill up faster than a routine takes shape. If you are starting skincare, or finding your current routine hard to keep up with, begin with four clear jobs: cleanse, target, moisturize, and protect. Here is a practical starting point for everyday adult skincare.
The starting point
Cleanse first, apply a serum chosen for your skin goals, support moisture, and finish the morning with sun protection.
01. Give the basics a place
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends a simple foundation: cleanse, moisturize, and protect your skin from the sun. A targeted serum can sit within that foundation to address the visible skin goals that matter to you. An effective routine does not need a long list of overlapping products.
Give each product a clear job. In this routine, the cleanser prepares the skin, the serum provides targeted care, the moisturizer supports hydration, and sunscreen protects during the day.

02. Keep cleansing gentle
Choose a mild cleanser without abrasive particles or alcohol. Use lukewarm water and your fingertips, rinse, and pat dry with a soft towel. Scrubbing or using rough cleansing tools can irritate skin.
The AAD advises washing in the morning and at night, and after heavy sweating. If you have questions about how often to cleanse or what suits your skin, a dermatologist can help you adjust your approach.

03. Target with a day or night serum
Serum is the targeted step in the routine. Apply it after cleansing and before moisturizer, following the product directions. Choose the formula around a defined cosmetic goal—such as the appearance of uneven tone, texture, redness, pores, blemishes, or fine lines—rather than layering several serums without a clear purpose.
Morning and evening can call for different support. A Day Serum belongs under moisturizer and sunscreen; a Night Serum belongs under moisturizer before bed. NUVÉE uses separate personalized day and night formulas so each step can be built around the skin’s visible signals and the needs of that time of day.
When starting a new serum, test it on a small area first. The AAD recommends applying a new skincare product to a test spot twice daily for seven to ten days before wider use. If irritation develops, wash it off and stop using it; seek a dermatologist’s help for a severe or persistent reaction.

04. Make room for moisture
Moisturizer helps retain water in the skin. Apply it while skin is still damp after cleansing. Oily skin can need moisturizer too; look for products suited to your skin type, including labels such as ‘non-comedogenic’ if clogged pores are a concern.
Think about the experience as well as the label. Is the texture comfortable? Does the product fit your budget? These are practical questions to ask when choosing something you plan to use regularly.

05. Make sun protection a daily habit
Choose a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Apply it before going outdoors, covering exposed skin, including often-missed areas such as the ears and neck. Follow the label for how much to use and allow about 15 minutes before sun exposure.
While outdoors, reapply every two hours and immediately after swimming or sweating. Cloudy weather does not remove the need for sun protection. Combine sunscreen with shade and protective clothing. A daytime serum is not a substitute for sunscreen.
